Malta

My criteria for choosing travel destinations can be equally strange and simple at times. My eyes get stuck on a little island which almost feels like it’s trying to hide within the Mediterranean between Italy and Africa. Yet it’s there in plain sight, the perfect mix of history, culture and a gentle ocean breeze to blow away the Central European winter blues.

From cities to islands – a glimpse into Greece

We started our trip in Greece, a place which combines a vast cultural heritage with some of the most beautiful islands and the country’s obvious struggle in the wake of a recent financial crisis.

Around Salzburg’s old town

I’ve been hosting Couchsurfers in Salzburg on and off for six years and keep having a lot of wonderful experiences. I’ll try to give my guests a memorable time, which I must admit is quite easy in a city, whose beauty regularly leaves everyone amazed, who comes for a visit.

If I don’t have time to show them around, the typical questions are “What should I visit? What can you recommend? What’s there, that I must not miss?”. So finally, this is my half day (or full day) Salzburg walking guide.

Trekking from Kalaw to Inle Lake

Bicycle tour to Kuang Si

The easiest way to reach Kuang Si is grabbing a tuk-tuk. Well, screw that. That’s boring!

Energetic work

If you want the pearl, leave the inland desert, and wander by the sea. Even if you don’t find it, at least you’ve been near the water. Be a warrior! Desire something powerfully! Saddle your horse and get ready for the quest. – Sanai

May your eyes shine – my first trip to Iran

There’s an image of remote places in the general public’s minds, formed by some direct experience and a lot of third hand reports, the media, misconceptions and prejudice. In the best case this can give you an incomplete or misleading idea about a place, its people, their life and their culture, other times a completely wrong one. For me it always meant, that the only way to find out, what life is really like somewhere else, is to travel there and see for myself – as good as I can in the short time available. Never has this been more true and eye-opening than during my trip to Iran.

Biking along Salzach and Inn

A multi-day bike tour has been on my bucket list for a long time. This year I didn’t waste much thoughts and decided to just go for it.

Summer day

Feet dangling in a clear blue mountain stream / thoughts linger of my dear sweet summer dream / my mountain ahead – a wonderful start / with you in my head and your song in my heart.

Big Island adventures

What struck me most about Hawai’i was the diversity. In a couple of hours you can go from lush rain forests to desert-like climate, from sealevel to 4200 m high volcano peaks and back. You can walk across endless lava fields, over land that’s probably younger than yourself or just relax on one of the picture perfect beaches.
