Salzburg running Glan

Running Europe Austria

I started running regularly in 2001. I always loved my hometown for its incredible nature and the great variety of running tracks, which come with it. Wherever I lived, it took just a few steps to get to one of those places, and I’d like to share seven of them here. There’s no way to present all my favourites. They are just too many. Instead here are the ones I spent (by far) the most time, kilometres, thoughts, dreams and joyful moments on over the years.

The obvious choice for my first running adventures lies right in front of our family home. The smell of hops is in the air while passing the Stiegl brewery on the way to the Glan.

This small river, which has been partly re-naturalized a couple of years ago, serves as an ideal orientation point to play around with different course variations. It’s a place popular with runners, bikers and inline skaters alike, but you’ll also meet people just going for a stroll or watching the planes land and depart on the runway of Salzburg’s airport just next to it.

Based on my feeling or the training plan, this area always offers plenty of choices. I can go fo a short run, the classic 10k (I ran my fastest ever 10k here) or go further to train for (half) marathons. My favourite variation is extending the run along the Glan until Fürstenbrunn and then coming back home via Glanegg and Eichet along the Almkanal (about 20k).
